Day 3 - Haley

Today was one amazing day! We left our hotel in Wooster Ohio at 7:30am to take a 2 1/2 hour ride to Edinboro, Pennsylvania. We went to an amazing place called the Wooden Nickel Buffalo Farm. The story behind this farm is very interesting. It started off as a dairy farm but the family was going through tough times and the owner, Dan, the Buffalo Man, unfortunately wasn’t interested in running a dairy. One day, he and his wife went on a trip and tried Bison meat and fell in love with it and its nutritional value. He went home to ask his dad if he could start raising Bison and from there Wooden Nickel Buffalo farm was formed. He taught us many interesting Bison facts and we all came to the conclusion that Bison are just very large, wild cattle. They resemble cattle almost exactly. It’s incredible. We ended the trip with getting to try Bison meat, with Bison cheese burgers that taste just like an original cheeseburger, if not better. It was delicious!

The buffalo were hiding in the barn eating hay.
After that, we took a 40 minute trip to Northeast Pennsylvania. Here is where we got the opportunity to visit Post Apple Farms. This place was awesome. The owner, Gordon Post, took us into the greenhouse and showed us where he starts growing his vegetables. It was really warm and humid inside, as opposed to the chilly air out of the green house. He then explained to us about the CSA which is the Community Supported Agriculture. He is running a CSA consisting of over 150 members. As members, they pay a fee to get 23 weeks of vegetables to feed their families. .This makes eating healthy an easier option. He’s having a rough time right now because of the amount of rain fall but is still doing his best to be able to provide vegetables to his community. After explaining the CSA, he took us into his barn and showed us the amount of vegetables each household gets. He then took us to his farm where he showed us the different kinds of vegetables he is growing, 150 varieties.  All of his crops looked beautiful. We walked across the street and took a look at his apple orchard. We got to look at the little apple growing on the tree which was pretty interesting.

We ended the trip at Niagara Falls, New York. It was the most beautiful thing that I have seen. Just standing there right where the water is falling hundreds of feet is insane. The water is crystal clear, so clear in fact, you can stand there and watch the fish take the biggest fall in their life. Today was one for the books and I will never forget it, it was spectacular!

A day I will remember for a long time.
